EU NewsPublication date: 4th August 2010 Source: Belgian Presidency Negotiations on climate change underway in Bonn The cycle of climate negotiations under way this week in Bonn is the next to last step before the Cancun Conference which should result in an international climate agreement. This step is therefore crucial for the delegates of the 178 countries represented in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They shoulder the heavy responsibilities of 'taking decisive steps in the fight against climate change', as affirmed by Christiana Figuères, the new United Nations head for 'Climate'.
Publication date: 2nd August 2010 Source: GNSS Preparations underway to use EGNOS for aviation European air navigation service providers are preparing to use EGNOS Safety-of-Life service when it is certified for the aviation sector later this year. Representatives from providers in France, the UK, Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Germany exchanged updates at a recent meeting in Brussels of their plans to test and use EGNOS for aviation after it is certified in November this year. The meeting was organised by the GSA on 25 June as a follow up to one held in March during Galileo Application Days. Francisco Salabert, of Eurocontrol's GNSS Policy Office, kicked-off the presentations by describing the benefits EGNOS would bring to the aviation sector under the EU's Single European Sky II programme. Satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) such as EGNOS provide good operational benefits and are a cost-efficient solution for general and business aircraft and helicopters, and for regional airports, he said. EGNOS is a key factor in meeting the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s call for all instrument flight rules (IFR) airports to have a vertical guidance system in place by 2016, Salabert added.

Publication date: 13th July 2010 Source: SESAR JU SESAR unites aviation world for quick green results The SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) selected 18 projects involving 40 airline, airport, ANSP and industry partners to expand the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE). Under the initiative, the SJU supports integrated flight trials and demonstrations validating solutions for the reduction of CO2 emissions for surface, terminal and oceanic flight operations. Seven of the 18 proposals include green gate-to-gate projects, among others between France and the French West Indies. One highlight of the programme will be a series of green transatlantic flights with the Airbus A380, the world’s largest airliner.
Publication date: 18th June 2010 Source: European Commission Commission and US agree to cooperate on civil aviation research and development negotiations for the establishment of a Memorandum of cooperation in civil aviation research and development. The two delegations, led by Hank Krakowski, FAA Chief Operating Officer, and Daniel Calleja, European Commission's Director of Air Transport, met in Madrid today, hosted by the EU Spanish Presidency, [in the presence of Spain's Transport Minister Jose Blanco]. The negotiating parties initialled the Memorandum and a first technical Annex promoting interoperability between their respective air traffic management (ATM) modernisation programmes: SESAR and NextGen. The Memorandum will enable the EU and the US to jointly pursue their common objective to develop and deploy greener and more efficient air transport systems through a legally binding cooperation framework, based on commonly agreed reciprocity principles. Under the Memorandum the two parties will be able to address through cooperative activities any research and development issues in civil aviation such as: safety, security, environment, performance, alternative fuels, aircraft design, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), sub-orbital airplanes, satellite-based communications and related ATM applications, etc.

Selected from amongst 732 proposals received in the third of seven planned calls for proposals under the Space and Security themes of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), the selected projects are set to strengthen the competitiveness of European industries and contribute to enhanced security for citizens. As a global actor and major space power, the EU relies on space and security research for strong border protection and enhanced environmental monitoring. Therefore funds also support the continued development of Europe's Global Monitoring system for Environment and Security (GMES).
